Borno’s Livestock Investments Aim to Turn State Into Regional Production Hub

By News Desk

The Federal Government has commended Borno State’s investments in livestock development, saying new breeding, poultry and dairy initiatives could position the state as a major livestock production and processing hub in Nigeria and West Africa.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Dr Idi Maiha, said this during an inspection of livestock facilities and projects in Maiduguri, including an artificial insemination centre, hatchery and dairy facility developed through collaboration between the Borno Government and the World Bank-supported Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project.
Maiha said the artificial insemination centre had recently completed an exercise involving 3,000 cattle owned by pastoralists, describing genetic improvement as critical to increasing livestock productivity. He said the centre would also serve as a training facility for staff and certified artificial inseminators needed to support the transformation of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

He said the state’s hatchery had also been upgraded from a poultry centre into a modern facility with a hatching capacity of about 40,000 eggs, with its products already attracting buyers from outside Borno. According to him, records showed that about 5,000 day-old chicks were being supplied to a buyer in Abuja, while discussions were underway to explore markets in neighbouring Niger Republic and Chad.
Maiha said the government was also working to revive the Gilda Madara dairy facility, established in the 1980s, with the introduction of Jersey cattle capable of producing significant quantities of milk. He said the long-term plan was to establish a cooperative-based milk collection system linking pastoralists in resettled communities with the dairy plant, where milk could be processed into yoghurt and other dairy products.
The minister said the sustainability of the projects would require stronger public-private partnerships and private-sector investment, adding that the Federal Government would work with Borno to attract funding and scale up the facilities. L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Dr Makinta Ali, said the interventions were designed to improve livestock productivity, breeding, poultry and aquaculture, adding that the state was working with federal authorities to unlock the sector’s economic potential.
