Borno Teachers Protest Abduction of 42 Pupils, Demand Urgent Rescue

By Adamu Aliyu Ngulde, Maiduguri

Teachers under the umbrella of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Borno State have staged a protest over the abduction of 42 pupils from Mussa Central Primary School in Askira/Uba, calling for immediate government action to secure their release and improve school safety.

The demonstration, led by the union’s Secretary Bako Monguno and National Publicity Secretary Yusuf Tom, took place amid growing concern over repeated attacks on schools in the region.

Speaking during the protest, Tom said the union was compelled to act because of what it described as escalating threats to education.

“Education is a basic right. We are calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted pupils and stronger protection for schools,” he said.

He urged authorities to intensify rescue efforts, adding that “children deserve to learn in safety and without fear.”

Education stakeholders across the state have also continued to react to the incident, describing it as deeply distressing for families, teachers and communities.

The Headmistress of Kaleri Primary School in Mafa Local Government Area, Hajja Gana Abba Mahmud, said the situation had created widespread fear among school communities.

“As a mother, I feel the pain of the parents. No one should go through this,” she said, adding that schools “must remain safe spaces for learning.”

She called on security agencies and government authorities to act swiftly to secure the release of the abducted children and prevent further attacks on schools.

In a separate reaction, a teacher at Ngowom Primary School in Mafa Local Government Area, Kaumi Usman, criticised what he described as a slow response from authorities.

“The abduction of innocent schoolchildren is heartbreaking,” he warning that insecurity is discouraging school attendance in rural communities.

He urged government officials to show equal urgency in responding to the crisis, saying every child deserves protection “regardless of where they live.”

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed update on rescue efforts as families continue to await news of the missing pupils.
