Borno Plans Major Livestock Processing Drive as Govt Backs Modernisation

The Borno Government says it is partnering with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to transform the state’s livestock sector and position it as a major investment and export hub.
State Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur disclosed this on Wednesday in Maiduguri when he received the Minister of Livestock Development, Dr Idi Maiha, who was in the state to inspect projects under the Federal Government’s Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) programme.
Kadafur said the partnership would strengthen livestock production, breeding, fisheries, processing and value addition, adding that Borno’s large livestock population and strategic location give it a comparative advantage in the sector.
He said the government was moving beyond traditional livestock production by promoting value addition, empowering farmers, developing production clusters and introducing modern breeding programmes. During the visit, Maiha inspected the Liquid Nitrogen Plant at the Mohammed Lawan College of Agriculture, Maiduguri, as well as the Gene Plasm Bank and exotic bulls acquired for cross-breeding and genetic improvement of local cattle.
Maiha expressed satisfaction with the facilities and commended the distribution of 3,000 cattle for restocking, saying the initiative would provide raw materials for emerging livestock processing facilities. L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Dr Makinta Ali, said the liquid nitrogen plant could produce about 5,000 litres daily, store 10,000 litres and generate an estimated N500 million monthly when fully operational.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Livestock Development, Alhaji Tijjani Mohammed, said Borno planned to establish a modern livestock processing industry through a public-private partnership. He said the proposed abattoir would have the capacity to process about 300 cattle and 500 goats and sheep daily, subject to technical and financial scrutiny, as part of efforts to strengthen the livestock value chain and create new economic opportunities.
