Borno Trains 100 Livestock Farmers to Boost Productivity and Business Growth

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — In a bid to strengthen livelihoods and improve food security in northeastern Nigeria, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), in partnership with the Borno State Government, has trained 100 livestock farmers in modern farming practices, business development, and financial management.

The participants, drawn from Borno State's three senatorial districts, attended a capacity-building workshop designed to help livestock entrepreneurs improve productivity, expand their businesses, and build resilience against economic and environmental challenges.

Livestock farming remains a critical source of income for thousands of households in Borno, a state recovering from years of conflict that disrupted agricultural activities and weakened rural economies. However, many farmers continue to face obstacles including limited access to finance, inadequate business management skills, poor market linkages, and the effects of climate change.

To address these challenges, the training focused on practical skills aimed at transforming livestock farming from a subsistence activity into a sustainable and profitable enterprise.

Participants received instruction on business plan development, market analysis, financial and investment planning, risk management, access to business finance, and effective record keeping. Facilitators also introduced modern livestock production techniques intended to improve efficiency, productivity, and profitability.

Speaking at the workshop, the State Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Makinta Alhaji Ali, emphasized the importance of equipping livestock farmers with entrepreneurial and management skills to strengthen the sector and support economic recovery.

He urged participants to put the knowledge acquired into practice, noting that improved business management is essential for long-term growth and sustainability.

"The objective is not only to improve livestock production but also to empower farmers with the skills needed to manage their enterprises effectively and sustainably," he said.

Representing the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Heather Ronke Akanni, the National Value Chain Consultant described the training as a life-changing opportunity for the selected beneficiaries.

She encouraged participants to maximize the opportunity and explained pathways through which they could access loans after completing the programme, enabling them to expand their operations and invest in business growth.

For many small-scale livestock producers, access to technical knowledge and financial literacy can be as important as access to livestock assets themselves. Experts say improved management practices can help farmers increase profits, reduce losses, and better withstand economic shocks.

Participants welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and relevant to the realities they face in running their businesses. They expressed confidence that the skills gained would help them improve productivity, increase income, and create employment opportunities within their communities.

The workshop forms part of broader efforts by L-PRES to strengthen livestock value chains across Nigeria through investments in productivity, resilience, and access to financial services.

As Borno continues its recovery from years of insurgency and economic disruption, stakeholders believe that empowering livestock farmers with modern skills and access to finance could play a significant role in rebuilding livelihoods, improving food security, and stimulating rural economic growth.

For the 100 farmers who participated in the programme, the training represents more than an educational opportunity. It offers a pathway toward stronger businesses, greater financial independence, and a more resilient future in one of Nigeria's key livestock-producing regions.
