Borno Launches Major Livestock Vaccination Drive to Curb Cross-Border Diseases

Borno, Nigeria-The Borno State Government has begun a large-scale livestock vaccination campaign aimed at preventing the spread of transboundary animal diseases, a persistent threat in Nigeria’s northeast where porous borders and regional trade routes heighten the risk of infection.

The exercise, launched at the Maiduguri Main Cattle Market, is being implemented through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development in partnership with the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, known as L–PRES. The initiative forms part of a nationwide distribution of vaccines designed to protect herds and strengthen livestock productivity across vulnerable regions.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the State Project Coordinator of L–PRES, Dr. Makinta Alhaji Ali, described Borno as a strategic gateway linking Nigeria with three neighboring countries. He said the state’s geographic position makes disease surveillance and vaccination critical to preventing cross-border transmission that could undermine both local livelihoods and regional food security.
State officials underscored the economic importance of the intervention. The Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Livestock Development, Hon. Goni Modu, and the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Shettima Ali Kakabe, urged herders to take full advantage of the free vaccination program. The Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Emmanuel Kaidal Diwa, said the vaccines are expected to significantly reduce outbreaks, while the Chairman of the Maiduguri Main Livestock Market, Alhaji Yakuba Goni Umar, pledged full cooperation from cattle rearers to ensure compliance and protect the state’s livestock industry.
