Nigeria’s Borno State eyes farmland revival in conflict-hit Kala-Balge‎‎

‎ A delegation from Nigeria’s Borno State government has visited the Kala-Balge Local Government Area in the country’s northeast to assess agricultural potential and boost food production in communities recovering from years of insurgency.

‎The team, led by the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Bawu Baba Musami, carried out field assessments in Rann, a remote community near the border with Cameroon that has been severely affected by the Boko Haram conflict.

‎Acting on the directive of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the mission sought to identify opportunities to strengthen food security, expand irrigation, and restore livelihoods across the region.

‎During consultations with local officials, traditional leaders, and farmers’ groups, residents expressed interest in dry-season farming, improved crop varieties, and rehabilitation of access roads to ease movement of produce to markets. Officials also noted the presence of fertile but underused floodplain soils along the Rann–Kala corridor, suitable for rice, maize, sorghum, cowpea, and vegetable cultivation.

‎Commissioner Musami said the government was committed to “targeted, resilience-aligned interventions” to help communities like Rann rebuild their farming base. Recommendations from the visit are expected to be submitted to Governor Zulum for approval.

‎Local leaders, including Kala-Balge chairman Ajid Zanna Musa Ajid, thanked the governor for his continued support and frequent visits to the area despite insecurity and poor road conditions.

‎The visit concluded with a renewed pledge by the Borno State government to accelerate agricultural recovery and strengthen rural livelihoods in the region.

‎The delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Fadama Project, and agricultural extension services.
