Nigeria police dismiss social media claim of child kidnapping in Maiduguri

Police in northeast Nigeria have denied reports circulating on social media that a woman was caught trying to kidnap a child in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State.

A viral voice note shared on WhatsApp alleged that an unidentified woman was apprehended in the Bayan Quarters area while attempting to abduct a child, and that other children were later found in her possession at a local police station.

But police spokesman ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso dismissed the claim as “false and misleading”, saying no such incident occurred in Maiduguri or anywhere in the state.

"The command wishes to categorically debunk this false and misleading information, as no such incident occurred within Maiduguri or any part of the state,” Daso said in a statement on Tuesday.

He urged residents to disregard the voice note and warned those spreading misinformation that they could face prosecution under Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act.

"The command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, but warns mischief makers and peddlers of fake news to desist forthwith or face the full wrath of the law,” he added.

Police also advised the public to verify information through official communication channels and trusted media outlets before sharing.
