The Multinational Joint Task Force, the regional military coalition combating insurgent groups around the Lake Chad Basin, has appointed a new Force Commander. Maj. Gen. Saidu Tanko Audu assumed command on Thursday, following a recent round of senior military postings by Nigeria’s Army Headquarters.
Gen. Audu, who previously served in the Nigerian Army Department of Training, took over from Maj. Gen. Godwin Michael Mutkut during a formal ceremony at MNJTF headquarters in N’Djamena. The shake-up comes in the wake of new leadership at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters and the armed services.
In his farewell remarks, Gen. Mutkut, an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, thanked the Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission—who also serves as Head of Mission for the MNJTF—along with military staff officers, the African Union Mission Support Team, the European Union and other technical partners. He credited the task force’s achievements to collective professionalism and cooperation.
Gen. Mutkut urged the multinational staff to extend the same support to his successor as he departs to take command of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.
Delivering his maiden address, Gen. Audu expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for the confidence placed in him. He praised his predecessor’s leadership and pledged to build on existing operational gains and strengthen coordination across the task force’s components.
He called on all personnel to remain disciplined, focused and innovative, emphasizing the importance of deepening collaboration with local communities and security stakeholders to secure lasting peace in the region.
The ceremony featured the signing and exchange of handover documents, a symbolic transfer of the command flag and a group photograph.
