Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday commended the Allamin Foundation for its support to women and girls in promoting community peacebuilding, describing its work as vital to the state’s post-insurgency recovery.
Speaking through the Head of Service, Dr. Mohammed Ghuluze, at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, Zulum said the landmark resolution has played a defining role in recognizing the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and advancing their involvement in peace and security efforts.
Ghuluze said the anniversary represents “25 years of advocacy and progress,” adding that Borno State, after more than a decade of insurgency, is committed to strengthening the inclusion, empowerment and protection of women as part of its rebuilding process.
First Lady Prof. Falmata Babagana Umara described the commemoration as a moment to reflect on “the journey, sacrifices, triumphs and unshakeable resilience” of women, particularly those in Borno. She noted that the state has witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of conflict on women and children, but said UNSCR 1325 has served as “a beacon of hope” that has guided and empowered them.
Prof. Falmata highlighted initiatives under her office, such as the Community Women Mediators Forum, which brings together Christian and Muslim widows, young women, mothers and community leaders to promote forgiveness, coexistence and social healing.
She also praised Governor Zulum’s administration for its commitment to women’s empowerment and peacebuilding, and commended Allamin Foundation founder Hajiya Hamsatu Allamin for programs including the She Builds Peace network and community mediation platforms.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwairah Gambo, said the ministry has collaborated with the Allamin Foundation to rehabilitate women and girls affected by insurgency, noting that 90 women have graduated from a deradicalization program. She added that the state has also developed an action plan for implementing UNSCR 1325 to ensure women’s participation in peacekeeping and community security efforts.
The Shehu of Bama, His Royal Highness Dr. Umar Kyari Umar El-Kanemi, speaking on behalf of traditional leaders, expressed gratitude to Governor Zulum for his dedication to peacebuilding and community reconstruction. He pledged continued support for gender inclusion in local institutions.
Earlier, Hajiya Hamsatu Allamin said UNSCR 1325 made clear that women are “not only victims of war, but leaders, negotiators, mediators, builders and defenders of peace.” She called for greater inclusion of women in conflict prevention, peace negotiations, reconstruction, reintegration and community decision-making.
Representatives from ICAN, Canada, UN Women, UNDP, UNICEF and WHO also delivered goodwill messages.
The event concluded with the presentation of awards to distinguished guests.
