‎Maiduguri, Nigeria- Once left in ruins by years of insurgent attacks, the border town of Malam Fatori in Nigeria’s Borno State is gradually coming back to life as residents return and the government accelerates reconstruction and security efforts.

‎Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restore the town’s infrastructure and livelihoods. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman A. Tar, visited Malam Fatori on Tuesday night to engage with local residents and review progress on rebuilding projects.

‎During the visit, Professor Tar commended the resilience of returning residents and praised the Nigerian Armed Forces, security agencies, and civilian volunteers for their dedication in securing the area.

‎“Mallam Fatori is rising again,” Professor Tar said. “Under Governor Zulum’s directive, we are ensuring that essential services, housing, and economic activities are fully restored to sustain life here.”

‎Malam Fatori, located near Nigeria’s border with Niger Republic, was for years a flashpoint in the Boko Haram insurgency that displaced thousands and left the town largely deserted. Recent military gains and renewed reconstruction initiatives have enabled the gradual return of civilians and the reopening of schools, markets, and public facilities.

‎Local observers say the state government’s presence in Malam Fatori underscores a broader effort to consolidate peace and rebuild confidence in communities once ravaged by conflict. The initiative also aims to promote cross-border trade and economic recovery in the Lake Chad Basin region, long affected by insecurity and displacement.

‎Residents who have returned describe the renewed sense of safety as fragile but encouraging. “We are beginning to live again,” said one trader, expressing hope that stability will last.

‎While challenges remain- including limited access to healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods- local authorities insist that the rebuilding of Malam Fatori marks an important step toward restoring normal life across northern Borno.
