Gov Zulum Reposes Confidence in Dr. Tahiru Shettima as Borno Electoral Umpire
By Ali Mamman Shuwa
In his continuing effort to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the sanctity of elections in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has nominated Dr. Tahiru Shettima, a seasoned public servant and retired permanent secretary, as the Executive Chairman of the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC). The appointment is subject to the approval of the Borno State House of Assembly.
Dr. Shettima’s name evokes respect and recognition across the state, especially in the sphere of local government administration where he carved a niche for himself.
Over the years, he rose through the ranks in the Borno State Civil Service, serving in various capacities and leaving an indelible mark on grassroots governance. His experience, spanning decades, has made him a household name in matters of local administration and governance.
Governor Zulum’s choice of Dr. Shettima is widely seen as both strategic and symbolic. In a state where local government elections are critical for grassroots development and democratic participation, appointing a man whose career has been deeply rooted in the system sends a clear message of credibility, competence, and commitment to reform.
Born and raised in Borno, Dr. Shettima has been described by colleagues as a meticulous administrator, a bridge-builder, and a man of principle.
His tenure as a permanent secretary was marked by policies that improved service delivery, strengthened institutional frameworks, and promoted transparency in local government affairs.
For Governor Zulum, whose administration has prioritized rebuilding institutions weakened by years of insurgency, Dr. Shettima’s nomination underscores the governor’s resolve to entrust sensitive responsibilities to individuals of proven integrity and experience.
Observers believe that his leadership of BOSIEC, once confirmed by the House, will usher in credible, transparent, and widely accepted local government elections in the state.
The Borno State House of Assembly is expected to deliberate on the nomination in the coming days, and if approved, Dr. Shettima will assume one of the most important responsibilities in Borno’s democratic journey.
As the state looks forward to renewed confidence in its electoral process, the nomination of Dr. Tahiru Shettima reminds citizens that credible elections begin with credible institutions — and above all, credible leadership.
