A Tribute to Late Kachallah Kolo — A Voice That Echoed Through Generations

BY ALI MAMMAN SHUWA
The Kanem–Borno region has produced many gifted voices, but few have resonated as deeply and as lastingly as that of Kachallah Kolo, the ace Kanuri news broadcaster whose remarkable career left an indelible mark on the Nigerian broadcast landscape.

Kachallah Kolo began his broadcasting journey at the Borno Radio Television Corporation (BRTV), Maiduguri, where his rich, commanding voice and impeccable delivery quickly set him apart. But beyond his professional brilliance, Kachallah was a mentor in the truest sense. Through patient guidance and a passion for excellence, he nurtured and shaped the careers of many who would go on to become household names in the industry — among them Ali Mamman Shuwa, Bulama Yerima, Zarami Modu Umar, Mohammed Yagana Gazali, and many more whose successes bear the imprint of his mentorship.

When Yobe State was created, Kachallah transferred his wealth of experience to Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC), Damaturu, where his dedication, leadership, and journalistic integrity saw him rise to the position of Director of News and Current Affairs. There, too, he became a pillar of professionalism, inspiring colleagues and upholding the standards of ethical journalism.

Even in retirement, Kachallah’s voice and vision continued to serve the public. He lent his talents to Gotel Television, Dandal Kura Radio International, and Radio Ndarason, proving that true passion for the craft knows no end. Whether reporting breaking news, anchoring major events, or producing thoughtful features, Kachallah brought authenticity, depth, and cultural pride to every broadcast.

Kachallah Kolo’s passing is not just the loss of a broadcaster — it is the silencing of a voice that told the stories of our people with dignity, accuracy, and heart. His mentorship lives on in the many journalists he trained; his professionalism remains a benchmark for the industry; and his legacy endures in the hearts of listeners who grew up trusting the sound of his voice.

May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may future generations of broadcasters draw inspiration from the life of Late Kachallah Kolo — the golden voice of Kanem–Borno.
