The Federal Government of Nigeria has quickly brought attention to the resurgence of violent attacks across parts of Borno State, and promised increased military support to reverse the unsettling trend.
In his effort to convince many people that a critical intervention is necessary, the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, led a high-powered delegation to Maiduguri on Friday.
The delegation included the General, Christopher Musa, top military commanders, and representatives of all service chiefs.
The visit was conducted as directed by the president to assess the security situation and discuss immediate solutions to the resurgence of insecurity with state authorities.
He stated that President Bola Tinubu gave authorization for the team to determine the precise needs of the security forces on the ground, particularly in terms of personnel and equipment.
It's worth noting that Borno, which has been through a decade of insurgency from Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, has made significant gains in security in recent years.
He said thousands of displaced individuals are now able to return home and begin rebuilding their lives thanks to these gains.
Gov. Zulum emphasized that threats are becoming more complex, and distinguishes between Boko Haram, ISWAP, and bandits. He warned that ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to receive international support, making the situation more dangerous.
According to Zulum there is a difference between ISWAP, Boko Haram, and bandits. "ISWAP and Boko Haram are receiving international support. Looking at our forest borders and the many immigrants entering through the Sahel, this is a major problem" he stated.
He cautioned that ISWAP and Boko Haram will still receive international support, which will make the situation more dangerous.
The governor made a point to emphasize the strategic importance of the Sahel in Nigeria's overall security structure.
