The security operation in the Tillabéri Region of the Niger Republic ended in the loss of at least 12 soldiers from Nigerien Defence and Security Forces (FDS), which was caused by a terrorist ambush.

According to intelligence sources, troops were attacked by insurgents disguised as civilians while on a security mission on Friday, April 25, approximately 10 kilometers north of Sakoira.

The soldiers reacted quickly and bravely to the surprise attack, holding their positions until the arrival of aerial and ground reinforcements, as reported by security sources. The terrorists had no choice but to retreat to the northern axis because of the combined counteroffensive.

In response to the ambush, the FDS initiated an extensive pursuit operation, using significant air and ground resources to locate the escaping perpetrators. The fierce fighting caused 12 soldiers to lose their lives while defending their country.

During mop-up operations, two individuals who were believed to have been involved in the ambush were arrested.

While trying to hide on elevated terrain, they were seized and have been handed over to competent authorities for further investigation to determine their roles and trace possible accomplices in terrorist networks.

The Tillabéri region, widely considered to be the epicenter of jihadist violence in the Sahel, is facing a persistent threat from terrorist groups, as evidenced by the latest attack.

The need to strengthen operational capacities and increase vigilance is highlighted in order to confront and overcome insurgent threats.
