Sudan's General Yasser El Atta's declaration that Chad's N'Djamena and Amdjarass airports are 'legitimate targets' in Sudan's ongoing conflict has received strong condemnation from the Chadian government.

General El Atta, who is in charge of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), made allegations in a video released on March 23 that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were using the airports to launch attacks against Sudan.

His remarks have caused concern in Chad about the possibility of the war escalating beyond Sudan's borders.

Chad's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that the statement was a direct threat to the country's security and sovereignty.

The government called El Atta's comments 'irresponsible' and warned against any attempt to attack Chadian territory, which would receive a firm and immediate response.

These reckless statements, if followed by action, would result in a declaration of war, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chad strongly condemns them.

As stated in the statement, the use of such rhetoric could lead to a dangerous escalation in the region.

The ministry brought up the fact that Sudanese governments have been trying to destabilize Chad for the past six decades, including by supporting armed rebellions and extremist groups such as Boko Haram.

Despite these challenges, Chad has consistently exercised restraint, relying on its security forces to protect its territory.

Our country's resilience is a result of divine providence and the determination of our defence and security forces," the statement added.

Chad reiterated its stance of neutrality in Sudan's internal conflict and emphasized its role as mediator for peace in the region.

The government mentioned that they had undertaken numerous diplomatic initiatives, with help from Egyptian mediation, to facilitate dialogue between the Sudanese junta and other parties involved in the conflict.

The statement highlights the fact that the war in Sudan is an internal matter that needs to be resolved by the warring parties themselves.

Chad is determined to support any effort that leads to a peaceful resolution" the statement emphasized.

Furthermore, the government emphasized Chad's humanitarian efforts, highlighting that it has welcomed and is still hosting hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees who are fleeing the violence.

Chad acknowledged the impact of this on its resources, but also reiterated its commitment to regional stability and solidarity with the Sudanese people.

Finally, Chad asserted its right to self-defence and pledged to respond with a strong and legal response in accordance with international law against any act of aggression against its territory.

"Chad is against any attack on its sovereignty. We are ready to defend our nation with all the necessary force," as per the ministry's warning.
