Borno Police discovered an unexploded ordnance in Maiduguri
The Borno State Police Command has recovered eight unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Maiduguri's Dala and Gwange areas.
ASP Grace Micheal, the command's deputy public relations officer, stated on Saturday that the recovery effort was made possible by the command's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad, which responded to distress calls from affected areas.
According to her, the initial distress call was made on November 22, 2024, at approximately 8:43 a.m., citing suspicious objects presumed to be explosive ordnance observed near a structure in the Dala-Abuja Talakawa Area of Maiduguri.
She stated that the EOD squad collected six projectiles and one unexploded mortar bomb from the scene.
Later that day, around 1:00 p.m., the police received another distress call from the Gwange Area, reporting an unidentified object suspected of being explosive ordnance washed ashore on the Gwange River bank.
"The EOD team responded quickly and recovered one unexploded hand grenade," ASP Grace revealed.
She noted that preliminary investigations suggested that the munitions washed ashore as a result of the state's recent disastrous flood.
'To avoid such tragedies, people of both communities were lectured on Explosive Ordnance Risk Awareness (EORE) and safety precautions,' the statement added.
The command advised the public to be calm and cautious, and to report any suspicious objects or actions to the police via emergency contacts 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
