WHO reports a huge drop in polio cases

By Adamu Aliyu Ngulde, Maiduguri

Speaking on World Polio Day in Maiduguri, WHO’s representative in Nigeria, Dr. Walter Mulombo, shared the news. He added that, despite these gains, some areas in the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel are still battling the virus.

In Nigeria alone, cases of variant type 2 polio have decreased by 38%. Dr. Mulombo, represented by Aisha Kadai, reminded listeners that polio symptoms can include fever, fatigue, and headaches.

WHO urges four doses of the polio vaccine for children and boosters for adults traveling to risky areas.

WHO, UNICEF, and local leaders have teamed up, vaccinating nearly 70 million children in high-risk zones. "Madagascar has now gone a year without variant polio cases, and southern Africa has contained its 2022 outbreak,” Mulombo noted.

Challenges like insecurity and limited healthcare access remain in the Lake Chad and Sahel regions, but Dr. Mulombo stressed the need for continued efforts and global support to achieve a polio-free future.
