MAIDUGURI, Nigeria- The Nigerian Army has commissioned 36 family housing units for junior soldiers at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to improve troops’ welfare and operational readiness.
Major General I.A. Ajose, Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, commissioned the quarters on Thursday on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. The ceremony was part of activities marking Shaibu’s first anniversary in office.
The project comprises three blocks of 12 two-bedroom flats each. Awarded in February 2025 by the Office of the Chief of Army Staff, construction began in early March 2025. The quarters feature modern facilities, including plaster-of-Paris ceilings, electrical fittings and kitchen cabinets.
In his welcome address, the Acting General Officer Commanding of the 7 Division said the project reflected the army chief’s commitment to improving troops’ welfare and working conditions. He said the accommodation would improve soldiers’ effectiveness, strengthen operational readiness and boost morale as they continue to protect lives and property.
A beneficiary, speaking during the vote of thanks, said the new accommodation would improve the welfare and comfort of soldiers and their families. “We sincerely appreciate your unwavering commitment to troops’ welfare and thank you for this remarkable gesture,” the beneficiary said.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum was represented at the ceremony by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar. Other attendees included the Deputy Theatre Commander, the Acting General Officer Commanding of the 7 Division, the Director of the Department of State Services and other senior military officers and dignitaries.
