Da'ish militants ambush Nigerien soldiers, others missing in Doutchi Region

An ambush by suspected Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) fighters in northern Doutchi, Niger Republic caused the death of eight members of the Defence and Security Forces (SDF), and 16 others are still missing.

On May 4th, there was an incident that happened during a joint patrol with National Guard and gendarmerie units in the Dosso Region.

The ambush that was carried out by Dogonkiria and Bagaroua, in the northern section of Doutchi Department, was described as intricate and coordinated.

The preliminary reports indicated that 67 SDF personnel and 10 vehicles were involved in the mission. According to reports, the attackers seized three vehicles.

Nigerien forces began a response operation in the area after the incident. The number of casualties is expected to increase as raking and search efforts continue.

The 16 individuals who are still missing are being considered potentially dead while waiting for confirmation.

An official statement by authorities in Niger Republic has yet to be released.
