Alice Loksha, 42, a nurse who was abducted by Boko Haram in March 2018 while working at the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) office in Rann, Kala Balge, Borno state, has escaped after six years.

The Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, North-East, Major General Waidi Shuaibu, disclosed this in a press briefing at Maimalari Cantonment Maiduguri.

Shuaibu also announced the escape of another kidnapped woman, Fayina Ali, who was kidnapped by Boko Haram militants  in 2020, while travelling from Kaduna to claim life insurance for her deceased brother.

According to Major General Shuaibu both Alissa and Fayina were forced to marry Boko Haram fighters while they were held captive.

Representing the Theater Commander, Deputy Maj.-Gen. Kenneth Chigbu, described Alice`s encounter:

“She was constrained to wed Abu Umar, with whom she had a child, Muhammad.

After Abu Umar's death, she was forced into a new marriage with ISWAP commander Abu Simak. She later escaped from Dogon Chuku camp in October 2024 and arrived at TC headquarters on October 29, 2024 for medical treatment.

He added that, Fayina was initially held captive in Kangarwa settlement for nine months, then transferred to Tumbunma for three years, then returned to Kangarwa for another year before escaping.

Alice, and Fayina was received by the commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, on behalf of the Borno government.

The women will receive psychosocial support and rehabilitation before being handed over to their families for integration,” said Zuwaira Gambo.
