BOGIS is putting in place measures to prevent illegal structures in Maiduguri

A committee of 13 members has been set up by the Borno State Government to review and categorize developments along riverbanks and buffer Maiduguri and its surrounding areas have zones and other waterways.
The Executive Secretary of Borno Geographic Information Services (BOGIS), Engr. Adam Bukar Bababe, believes that stopping unauthorized activities is urgent It is crucial to stop illegal developments in these high-risk areas, and he cautioned against further development in these areas.
Reviewing the current buffer zones along the riverbanks and updating them based on reality is part of the committee's objectives. Identifying developments within the zones, producing detailed plans for executive approval, and recommending measures to protect and plan along the rivers.
Almost all properties built along waterways are illegal under all regulations, as emphasized by Engr. Bababe.
In addition, he disclosed that over 1,300 structures have been designated as illegal since 2020.
He expressed that due to the flood disaster on September 10 that resulted in damages and loss of lives, the government will put more emphasis on stricter enforcement.

The committee, which has been given a two-week deadline to carry out its task and submit recommendations for executive approval, is headed by Tlp Liman Gana Mustapha.
