Borno Sports Writers Hail El-Kanemi Warriors After Fourth Federation Cup Triumph
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Borno State Chapter, has congratulated El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club following the team's victory in the 2026 President Federation Cup, describing the achievement as a testament to resilience, discipline and consistent performance.
In a statement issued on Saturday, SWAN Chairman Ibrahim Tukur praised the Maiduguri-based club after it defeated Ikorodu City 1-0 in the final to secure its fourth title in Nigeria's oldest domestic football competition.
The winning goal came in the 19th minute when Muktar Ismail converted a penalty, handing El-Kanemi Warriors another historic success and adding to the club's previous Federation Cup triumphs in 1991, 1992 and 2024.
"The hard-fought victory demonstrates the team's resilience, commitment, technical brilliance and remarkable consistency," the association said.
SWAN described the latest success as the reward for months of determination, teamwork and disciplined performances throughout the competition.
The association also commended the club's management, technical crew, players and backroom staff for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to achieving success.
It further praised the Borno State Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Poverty Alleviation, Comrade Saina Buba, for his leadership and continued support for the development of football in the state.
SWAN also acknowledged the sustained investment of Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in sports development and youth empowerment, noting that government support has contributed significantly to the growth of football in the state.
The association appealed to the state government to reward the victorious team with meaningful and lasting incentives as recognition for bringing honour to Borno State.
According to SWAN, improved welfare packages, modern sporting facilities and sustained investment are essential to enable El-Kanemi Warriors remain competitive in domestic competitions and represent Nigeria successfully on the continental stage.
"We appeal to the government to reward the victorious team generously with enduring incentives that will inspire future sporting excellence," the statement added.
El-Kanemi Warriors' latest Federation Cup success reinforces the club's status as one of Nigeria's most successful teams in the competition and marks another milestone in the football history of Borno State.
