Malaria confirmed as cause of deadly outbreak in DRC

BY: NEWS DESK

The Democratic Republic of Congo's health officials have confirmed that a mysterious illness that killed more than 50 people earlier this year is malaria.

Tests confirmed that the disease caused the deaths of 52 people and affected nearly 1,000 others in Equateur province, as confirmed by the National Public Health Institute on Monday.

Fever, fatigue, vomiting, and weight loss were among the symptoms. Initially suspected to be either malaria or food poisoning, the illness was identified after lab testing on patient samples.

The illness was initially thought to be either malaria or food poisoning, but lab testing on patient samples led to its identification.

Officials are still eagerly anticipating the results of tests on food, water, and drink samples.
